Afrizo - Daystar University

So, Afrizo is finally on their US tour!
Afrizo is the music group from Daystar University that is touring the US for three months to raise awareness and funds for Daystar Scholarships!
Jan, who works at Daystar University, Kenya, has been posting updates leading to their tour and I've only just 'discovered' her blog! Why is this project close to my heart? Well, 1) My sister Debra is in the group, and 2)They are helping raise money not just for their education but for many others. I love how Jan captures the purpose and reason for their tour:
Their main purpose for the trip is to raise awareness for the needs of Daystar University. They hope to raise funds for student scholarships and thank the generous donors that have been faithfully giving – even in these hard economic times.
And I will join Jan in appealing for donations:
Please follow their tour of the US; pray, attend a concert (if you happen to be anywhere close to where they will be performing - Jac's words.). They really are amazing musicians! To listen to a song or two check out the Daystar website. They will not disappoint!
Who knows, I may attend a concert myself if I find myself blessed enough to organise a trip to the US before they head back to Kenya. Now, that would be a blessing, so here's to planning!

More on Jan:
An evangelical, believing Christian who cares deeply about God's children, therefore is working to help equip the future generations of Kenyans to address their own issues in a holistic way.
Please check Jan's blog for regular updates. Or, check mine for regular updates via Jan's, lol. And please, do not forget to check out Afrizo's schedule and buy tickets to a concert! If unable to attend any of the concerts, donations are greatly appreciated, so please give something! Help educate a student.

Brightest of blessings to all!

How's the gardening, Jac?

Well, it's so, so. Loving the potatoes, in all colours:

Haulms have been cut off the remaining potatoes just in case blight gets them. I harvest when we need to eat at the moment, so I'm not worrying about storage.

Plum trees have been heaving with this year's plum glut:

Tomatoes are blighting before I get any fruit. Again, sigh:

The last of the onions are harvested and drying up: Pics to follow as not taken yet and camera missing at the moment

Sweetcorn are growing their blessed corny kernels slowly but surely: Pics to follow as not taken yet and camera missing at the moment

And I'm growing avocado trees! This was a totally unexpected! All I can say is.... seems I ate loads of avocadoes when they were in season, and affordable, and as usual, I throw the seeds in the compost bin. I just never thought they'd germinate, and well, I've a few germinated avocado seeds! At least 10! And I cannot bring myself to knowingly compost/kill them, so I guess I'll try and nurture them, see what comes of them and perhaps give them away as pressies in future if they grow? Anyway, a couple of pics below, taken using my phone before it died on me. More pics to follow when that camera gets found.

Last but not least, squashes. I planted mine late, so sadly, no courgettes for me this year it seems! No pumpkins or butternut squash either. No cucumbers. Sadness! Learnt my lesson though, I'll never take my gardening for granted again! I miss my courgette glut, lol! I miss beans too, as I decided not to plant any this year. Won't repeat this decision again! Oh, and I've got globe artichokes! All 6 of them! I thought they were lemon cucumbers (mixed up my seedling labels) but no, they are globe artichokes! Can't wait to get some next year. And the brassicas are also coming along nicely. But I still need to plant my leeks. My gardening time management has left alot to be desired this year. Needless to say, tomatoes and peppers/chiles are getting sown in December/January for 2010. That way, I may be blessed with a decent tomato harvest for a change. Till next time, stay brightly blessed!

Gardening - Random Pics 2009 Continued

Okay, I have plenty of photos, so here are more. Trying to post on my gardening year so far.....

My last garlic from last year's crop. Pic taken 09/05/09. Wasn't prepared for the sadness I felt using up that last little bulb of my home grown garlic - weird! Not too long before this year's crop is ready though!

Fast forward to 20/07/08 and my new crop is ready! I confess to picking a couple of bulbs before then to tide me over as buying just did not feel right! I felt like I was cheating on my crops, lol! We bought just 2 bulbs between the last of last season and the first of the new season. I just so love eating my own!

Gardening - Random Pics 2009

Raspies! Lovely! I really should get an Autumn variety to enjoy later in the year.
Pretty weed! Some type of euphorbia, I think?

Something the birds ate and left over! Slow worm, I think...

Bad onions (going to seed too soon, lol) and colourful potatoes for a salad ;-)!

Gardening - Random Pics 2009 Continued

Could someone identify these weeds for me please (above 2 pix)? They've gotten on my nerves all summer and I bet next year will bring more as they went to seed and spread themselves all over the place, sigh.

Potaoes! I love harvesting!

Blackberries are in plenty this time of year, I get at least 2 pounds worth with each picking. I need a bigger freezer, and time to do more preserving!

Cherries. The trees did well this year. Unfortunately, so did the birds and some thieving humans. I harvested once. The rest was stolen as I wasn't around the plot much at the time. Ah well...
See me bwing silly, hiding away amongst the branches and fruit? Lol
Garlic scapes and some garlic. Shallots underneath. Alliums did well for me this year, and I'm thankful to Mama Nature for that as we won't be buying any for a long time. I love self sufficiency! Not bad, considering I planted in a hurry in the spring!

My only gooseberry and cherry harvest. The thieves got the rest, sigh! Still thankful!

Gardening - Random Pics 2009 Continued

Purple sprouting broccoli- they blew on me! No compact heads, sigh, and I thought I firmed them in well. Hope this year's crop do better.

Silver chard and perpetual spinach.

Spring new potatoes. Planted in bags last year and was disappointed. After all the time, effort and compost, this is all that came of 4 bags! Granted it was done in the garden at home where there isn't much sunshine, but still.

Had to put this one on. A one legged pigeon. It was hopping along quite happily, lol!

Baby garlic.

Had alot of chard and perpetual spinach! I planted 2 rows of silver chard and perpetual spinach late last year for the first time and was not disappointed. Harvested leaves through winter - lovely! I let them go to seed so I could save some seed as I will not be without them in the garden ever again!. Fab source of green juice too, lol! On the look out for rainbow coloured varieties now.

Harvest. Chard and leeks. The joys of having a winter crop.

Health and Fitness

And the quest continues. Low down..... A slim and fit but not particularly healthy Jac meets Al- svelt, fit and muscular. They fall in love and before long all those gym sessions are abandoned for time spent together nurturing their budding relationship. Both love good food, so they cook together and eat together. Al's a bigger eater than Jac - who eats big for a girl anyway, but Jac reckons she can match Al's portions. Love grows, and so do their waist lines. 7 years down the line and Jac realises this cannot go on. She's gained 20kgs (44lbs) and even though people exclaim when she says she has 44lbs to lose and ask her where these 44 extra lbs are, making her feel she's okay, doesn't look that bad, she knows she needs to shift them somehow. So, she embarks on a healthy eating programme, with the majority of her food being of the raw veggie and fruity kind, with a few fresh veggie and fruit juices and smoothies added for extra nutrition. She also takes up exercise and starts running but gives up as it's so darn hard, plus her trainers are not very good at supporting her joints (she learns of this months later)! Takes up walking and gets a FitBug pedometer to track her progress. All is well, weight coming off. Signs up for a work netball team, which is great as it's brand new, so all levels of fitness allowed. Training to start in August. Can't wait. Also goes away to Cornwall for 5 days and rides on a tandem bike with Al (see, Jac cannot ride a bike, so has to ride with someone!), loves it so much she signs up for riding lessons. Excting too! By July she's halfway, having lost 22lbs of the 44. But, those cheeky old eating habits are creeping back after she let go whilst on holiday. She's on a plateau, weight isn't coming off, yet she's not gaining..... but if things carry on, she'll gain again, steadily, won't she? Netball training starts - every Tuesday. She loves it but boy, her body is in shock! The training only started gently and only on half a court but it certainly isn't a stroll in the park! She learns she needs to get new trainers as well as banding support for the old creaky joints! Apparently, her 2 year old trainers are way overdue a renewal! Trainers should be changed after every 500 miles OR every 6 months, whichever comes first. It's no wonder she couldn't keep up with the running months ago, in those old, shock-absorberless-knackered trainers! Weighs self on the 12th of August - 2 lbs up. She cannot allow this! Need to act ASAP! but, She'll get on track next week, right? Have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, Al is doing wonderfully! He's got himself a FitBug as well, and is doing so well and is paying attention to his diet with the help of FitBug and PruHealth. He's so into it, doing tens of thousands of steps on his fitbug a day and working out pretty much 5x/wk. He's finding out calories in different foods, and not just that, he's taking an interest into researching on different foods and their nutritional values and is learning about his diet! For the first time ever, Al is keeping a close eye on those calories, and Jac cannot believe it! And he's slowly but surely losing the whatever how many pounds he gained over the 7 years of coupling happiness. Yet he's not depriving himself of anything. He'll eat whatever he fancies, but will choose the better options - organic, clean and not laden with pesticides, hormones and artificial food 'enhancers'. Jac is proud of him, but needs to get back on track as this is a milestone. The Al is improving on himself. He's moving away from the belief that 'if it's not swimming in fat it's not tasty'. He prepares dinners that are so filling, so nutritious and only totalling 400-500 calories. Green salad with tuna salad to accompany. 2 salads for dinner - yum!. Green salad with a chop. Beetroot salad with salmon. Salad with steak. The daily doses of big pasta bowls and potatoes and rice that were common in this household are history. And Jac is thankful. It does not take nagging to transform. It takes education. And Jac's Al is educating wonderfully and Jac is loving it. Al found out that a slab of rump steak has half the amount of calories of a similar amount of pork. And salmon is heftier than mackerel. All this from PruHealth health promo e-articles. It's all good. And what is more, both their PruHeatlh premiums are coming lower next year. Jac is heading for gold status, Al is going for silver. He might make gold, but he started late - we'll see, he's motivated. Either way, they're saving a third at the very least on their premiums next year. That's why PruHealth is good. They reward you for being healthy. Now, Jac and Al believe they've always been healthy as they've consumed healthy food for a few years now, just more than they should have done. But, they are getting even healthier, as ther are always improvements to be made.

And that's the low down, written by me (Jac) in the third person.

Off to the Lottie now for some garden workout and a walk to boot to and from the allotment! I really am loving the healthy us! And Al is playing a good part of it, driving some of it and not just me, which is the really good bit!

Till next time,

Love and health dear readers!

Family Thoughts

Okay, I rarely blog about family but today I make an exception. I support my family financially. I've taken care of them for all the years I've been working and it's no easy task running two households - in London and in Kenya. Anyway, it was never going to last forever, and I'm so happy things are looking up. I'm soooo happy for my sister Deborah (she prefers Debra, but hey, Deborah was the original spelling. We call her Willi as she's also named after my grandma, Wilfrida). See, she's at Daystar University in Kenya, studying Media/Communications. A Media/communications degree in Kenya is still very highly marketable and gives opportunities to wonderful work prospects, as opposed to a degree in Media/Communications in the UK which doesn't really amount to much and is considered by many as a cop-out (I may be wrong here, but it's the general perception I get). Anyway, it's been a massive struggle for me as I've been sponsoring her tuition fees, but there's always light at the end of the tunnel: Afrizo. She performs with this university group and they are scheduled to tour the US in the Autumn to raise sponsorship funds for themselves and others otherwise not able to attend college. Anyway, long story short - they went for their US visas today and she succeeded! She got a US visa! This makes me so happy because it signals a blessing that is two fold. Willi gets to go out into the world and work for a good cause that'll guarantee her place in college till her degree is completed, and my brother, Victor gets to get a chance at a degree he so needs to get a foot in on employment. Victor has had a raw deal. He spent years in college, studying IT and various components of computer technology but unfortunately, the college he chose only awarded diplomas. Diplomas don't get people jobs in Kenya, it seems. Not in IT anyway. So, Victor has only really done volunteer work for the past few years, and none ends up with paid employment. He keeps at it though, to keep abreast with the fast moving world of IT but it's not the same as employers sending an employee to a course so as to keep abreast with what's new. He's fallen way behind, sigh. However, light at the end of the tunnel - Victor got a place at a University in January and still has his place on a degree course of some sort (IT/engineering type degree), but what has stopped him attending is fees. I just couldn't sponsor him and Willi too. I feel the need to sponsor him as he's feeling low and discouraged. He sounds discouraged. He looks discouraged. I feel bad for him. He needs an opportunity. So, with Willi sorted, Victor will get a computer first and foremost, and if still no sponsors come through for him in January 2010, I'll take a deep breath and sponsor him. A break between now and then will get me prepared for it, but hey, one can't deny the value of education, so as hard as it may be, I'll do it for my brother.

Why am I blogging about this? I don't know. I guess it is one of my quests - getting an education. My brother really, really wants one and I'll help him get one. And pray that like my sister Willi, he'll get a sponsorship opportunity and give me a break in about a year or so, please God.

It Is Done!!!!!

I believe I've managed to import all of my blogs and incorporate them here, hence the 3 posts below this one are all the same, lol. I thought I'd delete them but decided against that as this is a momentuous occassion for me and I happen to be a sentimental fool sometimes and this is one of those times. I've loved all my blogs but really didn't need them all. Thi one is enough. I'll just look through the posts imported here to be sure then I'll delete the blogs. Kinda sad, but it's necessary. Just could not keep up with them all. Plus, a bit of tidy-up is good for the soul, and that's what I'm trying to do. Now all I need to work out is how to get the labelling done well and neat. I'll go with Gardening, Maybe Baby, Hair, Kenya-Afrika, Work Life, Bees, Chicken etc.

Stick with me peeps, I'll be back proper with a new and improved blog - exciting!!!

Jaxhair is moving!!!

It's been long since I blogged here. Too, too long. Well, I'm getting back to it but with a few changes. I love blogging, however, I just cannot manage the few blogs I started with. Therefore, I'm merging all my blogs to one and moving all my blogs to my main one - Jac's Quests. In the next few months, what I'll do is blog about whatever it is I'm blogging about at Jac's Quests while I work out how to move all my posts over there. I know it can be done, just don't know how, but I'll try. So, here's hoping that you will visit Jac's Quest and enjoy my blogging about Gardening, Hair, Kenya and everything in between.

Blessings!

Long time, Back soon. Some updates.

Okay, I know I do this alot, but I'll be back, I promise. Updates aplenty, just have no time to get updated, sigh.

Allotment: Inspite of time constraints, (work, sigh) I'm up to date (ish), and eating potatoes, onions, garlic and shallots from the plot, and will be till 2010. Also enjoying blackberries and the plum tree is heaving! My cucurbits were late in but they are getting there. Corn are coming up but were also late, so fingers crossed for an Indian Summer. No beans this year, but Gilbert's got plenty to share. Ditto cabbages and cucumbers and courgettes. I think I might be self sufficient(ish) with potatoes and alliums, so I'm uber pleased. No buying, hopefully for the whole year!!! And I plan to get some bees and hens within the next year. Bees first though!

Weightloss: Lost half the weight I want to lose. 22lbs down, 22lbs to go and I'm 3 jeans sizes down. Plateau-ing at the moment, but life's too short to get stressed about every little plateau! I know what I need to do to stoke it, just need to commit to it.

Baby: Still waiting, but not getting overly stressed over this too. After all, I'm still only 30-something ;-)! If it happens it happens, but while I wait, I'm getting on with life, taking opportunities at work and advancing my career. I figure the higher up the ladder I'm at, the easier things will be financially with a little one to look after and I know I will not work full time with a baby around!

Hair: My afro grows! And it's strong and healthy! 7 inches and counting. My longest layer is at shoulder length at the back and my fringe is touching my top lip. Armpit length beckons, lol. I know, I should update this in the hair blog but I'm doing it here, as I plan to make all my blogs one. Can't keep up with the multiples, as much as I'd love to!

Life in general: Getting better! Taking it easy and enjoying doing things I love. I'm positive about the future.

Now all I need to work out is how to merge all these blogs into one without losing posts. Need some 'puter play time soon. I know there's a way, I just need to work it out! In the meantime, all will be updated on this blog.

Bright blessings all, and thanks for visiting!
