How I Use My African Black Soap (Shea Soap)

I love this soap! It could be used as a bar but we (my household) prefer it in liquid form. So, I buy it by the kilo and here's how I use mine.....

**Roughly chop up 50g

**Put in a jug and pour 100mls of your chosen diluent, warm - herbal infusions, flower waters or plain water or indeed, whatever nice diluent you prefer. Leave to stand for an hour, stirring occassionally.

**Once cool and all soap is dissolved, stir till thick and creamy.

**Transfer to a bottle and add essdential oils if desired.

**Enjoy for 2 months.

ABS is the gentlest soap I've come across yet. I further dilute if using for a shampoo but can be used in this concentration. Try it out, see what your hair preffers or can withstand and go from there!

Oats For Skin & Hair

All you need is a muslin bag, an old sock or a cut off stocking / tights / pantyhose leg - or anything that'll hold in oats yet allow water in and out.

**For an oaty bath, add a handful of oats to a bag, place under the tap while it fills the bath for wonderfully moisturising, milky bath. Use the bag containing oats as you would a sponge and make sure to squeexe all that oaty goodness off that bag before getting off that bath!

**For hair, I fill a bag with a tablespoon of oats, place in a bowl and add water to it to dilute my African Black Soap. I squeeze all the oaty goodness out of it, mix with the soap and actually use the bag to scrub my scalp while I squeeze any remaining oaty goodness. I normally pour my shampoo to a spray bottle - this ensures the shampoo is well distributed to all of my scalp and none is wasted. You end up using alot less than you would just pouring it on and it's much more effective too.

Give it a try, you'll love it!

Day 14 - 29/12/2008

Still going strong - 14 days into the challenge and all is well!

Last night I washed and deep conditioned.

Process:

*Pre-pooed with warm ayurvedic coconut oil (vatika), which I'm desperate to finish off so I can make my own. I applied this liberally to all my strands and scalp and had a little head massage for good measure. Covered in plastic (I used cling film, aka saran wrap. Plastic caps and shopping bags do the same job), and tied a scarf around my head to get my body heat working on it. Let sit for 2-3 hours.

*Shampoo with African Black Soap - I melt my ABS in warm water, either plain, or infused with herbs or flower water, add a bit of glycerine and bottle for all over use. To use as shampoo, I further diluted in oat milk. Soap and oatmilk recipes for skin/hair post coming up :-). I hardly ever measure but I'd say a ratio of 1:3 or 1:4 (soap:diluent) to further dilute the soap. I had a good amount of lathering too ;-).

*Thoroughly rinsed out soap. My last rinse had an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse for good measure but this is optional. I just felt like it as I didn't want to add vinegar to my very last rinse post deep conditioning.

*My DC was simple and homemade - overripe bananas, coconut cream, some shea butter, honey and molasses - all blended together to a thick smooth mixture which didn't drip on application. (Yup, it's good enough to drink as a smoothie! Yup, shea butter is edible - just buy unrefined, food grade shea!) Covered up again and slept on it. Rinsed this morning and my hair's wonderfully soft and fresh! I made enough for a few applications as it freezes well.

*I airdried and redid some twists. The retwisting will be a continuous job till I'm done with the 100 days challenge. And yup, it IS a challenge, lol!
